What is Acupuncture?
The history of acupuncture can be traced back over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest health care systems still being practised today. Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile, single use, disposable needles into ‘acupuncture points’ along the body’s energy pathways, known as meridians, to clear energetic blockages and promote the balanced and healthy flow of energy, or Qi, throughout the body.
What are the benefits of acupuncture?
It can be effective in the treatment of a number of acute and chronic ailments, is a great drug-free pain relief alternative and takes an holistic approach by addressing the underlying cause of the condition, as well as the symptoms. This approach links body, mind/emotions and spirit and so can help on all levels of one’s health and well-being. Chinese medicine is also well known for focusing on the prevention against disease, and the maintenance of general well-being.
Your Acupuncture Treatments
There are many styles of acupuncture available these days. The Acupuncture Thérèse offers is very simple and based on a holistic and traditional method of diagnosis and treatment. She rarely uses more than 3 or 4 needles per session and her technique is gentle, as there's no strong manipulation of the needles. Each treatment begins with an in depth discussion covering your diet and lifestyle, and any adjustments that may help. The acupuncture treatment lasts for 20-30 minutes, where you will be able to relax and enjoy time and space to yourself on a very comfortable massage table. After the first session we will then discuss your treatment plan and take it from there. Also note that all needles used are disposable, sterile, single use needles.
Laser acupuncture is also an option, for children under 13 years of age and for adults wanting to avoid puncturing the skin.
Preparing for your session
• Please wear loose and comfortable clothing that is easily stretched over knees and elbows
• It’s ideal if you remove jewellery before the session and turn off your mobile phone
• You will be left in the room for 20 minutes to relax or sleep while the needles take effect
• My treatments work beautifully in collaboration with other therapists but we recommend that you avoid other body treatments for at least 24, preferably 48 hours following acupuncture
